The Little Sea: Müritz
12,000 years ago, the last ice age formed the Mecklenburg Lake District, which includes 1117 lakes. At 117 square kilometers, the Müritz is the largest inland lake in Germany. The western part of the Müritz National Park begins on the eastern shore and is home to more than 800 plants, 48 mammals, 198 birds and 14 fish species.
It is fortunate for nature that for decades large parts of the Müritz were in the GDR-restricted area. This allowed a wonderfully wild landscape with lakes, forests, and moors to develop undisturbed in the south of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
